Dundee Literary Festival - Day Four (26/06/10) Events schedule

Photo opportunities will be available at all the events taking place on Saturday, June 26th.

One of Scotland's best loved novelists, a host of local writers, and the winner of the 2010 Dundee International Book Prize are among those who will be appearing at the fourth day of this year's Dundee Literary Festival.

Controversial and popular in equal measures, Iain Banks will be reading from his new book, while Alan Wright, winner of this year's Dundee International Book Prize, will also read extracts from his début novel and discuss what winning the award means to him.

Dundee Literary Festival, a five-day celebration of literature, is now in its fourth year. In that time, the University of Dundee-organised Festival has established itself as one of the highlights of the city's cultural calendar.

The full schedule for Saturday, June 26th is:

  • Alistair Urquhart (10am, £3/£2 concessions) - Alistair Urquhart's amazing memoirs of his time interned in a Japanese Prisoner of War camp has become a Sunday Times Bestseller. He will read from his book and answer questions from the audience.
  • Local Voices (11am, £3/£2 concessions) - Sue Peebles and Neil Forsyth are both local authors who have enjoyed great success since embarking upon writing careers.
  • Stuart Kelly - Scotland: How a Writer Invented a Nation (12pm, £3/£2 concessions) - The Literary Editor of Scotland on Sunday will explore the enigma of Sir Walter Scott and the disparity between his influence and his status.
  • Tom Bryan (1pm, £5) - Canada-born, Tom Bryan has lived in Scotland for many years and is a widely published and broadcast poet and writer. He will read his poetry at this event, and a sandwich and tea or coffee is included in the ticket price.
  • Kenny Reid - A Major Obsession (2pm, £3/£2 concessions) - Kenny Reid decided to live every golf fan's dream by touring each of the four majors in one year. A Major Obsession is the insightful and quirky story of his odyssey.
  • The Nethergate Writers (2pm, free entry) - Dundee's most prolific writing group will be launching their new book, Whodunwhat, an exciting collection featuring everything from poetry to crime, humour to 'slice of life' encounters.
  • Dundee International Book Prize - the winner (3pm, free entry) - 2010 winner Alan Wright will be reading from his debut novel, An Act of Murder, which saw him scoop the £10,000 cash prize and land a publishing deal.
  • Iain Banks (4.30pm, £3/£2 concessions) - One of the most popular Scottish writers of his generation will be reading from his new book, Transition.
  • Allan Brown - Inside the Whicker Man (7.30pm, free entry at Dundee Contemporary Arts) - Inside the Whicker Man is a treat for all cinema-goers, an exhaustively researched book that achieves a near-perfect balance between history, trivia and serious analysis. Allan Brown will speak about his book before a special screening of the film, containing previously unseen footage, takes place.

All events take place at the University's Dalhousie Building unless otherwise stated.
