Lucky 13 professors to present at prestigious showcase event

Thirteen newly-appointed professors from a wide variety of disciplines will later this week share the ideas that make them tick during the University of Dundee's Discovery Day event.

Discovery Day 2010 will see some of Dundee’s finest academic talent take part in the annual showcase of cutting edge research carried out at the University.

The 13 presenters come from fields as diverse as anatomy, economics, engineering and education. They will have the chance to share their enthusiasm and knowledge of their particular area in a series of 15 minute lectures ranging over a wide spectrum of subject matter.

University Principal Professor Pete Downes, who will officially open this year’s lectures, said he was delighted that the new professors would have such an excellent platform from which to highlight their work.

'Discovery Day 2010 intensely concentrates the talents of our most recently appointed or promoted professorial staff into a single day of short presentations,' he said.

'It is a must for all who want to learn about where the University is going and who will be taking it there. And there is something for everyone, with the range of subjects that are covered as well as the opportunity to pose that penetrating question.'

The short Discovery Day lectures - now in their seventh year at Dundee - have a reputation for providing an entertaining and accessible glimpse into a range of challenging and often complex subjects. Their format has become a model for the sector, imitated by a number of other universities in the UK.

The Discovery Day 2010 lectures take place at the D’Arcy Thompson Lecture Theatre on Friday, January 15th, and will be preceded by welcome coffee at 10.30am, with the first lecture beginning at 11am.

Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. A full programme is available at: www.dundee.ac.uk/principalsoffice/dd10.htm.
