Creative writing tips for school pupils

Photo opportunity: 1pm on Tuesday, January 19th at College Hall, University of Dundee. Professor Kirsty Gunn will be teaching creative writing skills to pupils from Angus, Dundee, Fife and Perth schools. For information on the day, contact Anna Day, director of Literary Dundee, 07967 475573.

Pupils from schools across Tayside and Fife, who are studying English at Advanced Higher level, will later this week have the chance to improve their creative writing skills thanks to the University of Dundee.

The University will host a workshop featuring around 50 pupils from Bell Baxter High School, Brechin High, Cragie High, Harris Academy, Perth Academy and Perth High on Tuesday, January 19th.

Kirsty Gunn, Professor of Creative Writing at the University, will lead the workshop, which will include practical exercises, panel discussions and a question and answer session.

The participants will experience the unique way in which creative writing is taught at Dundee, and hear from ex-students who have gone on to have their work published and become established members Dundee’s literary community.

Professor Gunn said this was a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to sharpen their skills and improve their grades, and also discover what the University has to offer budding writers.

'I'm delighted that we can invite secondary school pupils along to see what we're up to at Dundee,” she said. “The programme we're offering at the University is completely different to courses on offer elsewhere, and it’s great to be able to give the students some proper writing experience.'

The University of Dundee is becoming a leader in teaching Creative Writing, with modules available at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as a stand alone course.

The workshop takes place between 12.30 - 4.30pm at College Hall, University of Dundee.
