What's worth discovering @ Dundee - The University of Dundee video competition

Budding filmmakers from the Dundee area are being urged to get the camera rolling and create a short video detailing the discoveries they have made in the city for a new competition run by the University of Dundee.

Dundee is no stranger to innovation and invention, and the City of Discovery continues to lead the way in fields as diverse as drug discovery and digital media. However, the competition organisers are interested in discoveries of a more personal nature, and are looking for videos which capture the special nature of the city and people of Dundee.

‘What's worth discovering @ Dundee?’ challenges would-be directors to make films, animations or photo montages of no more than 90 seconds in length that showcase the city and what it means to the maker.

The competition is open to all, and each entrant can submit as many videos as they wish. Special equipment is not a prerequisite as original and interesting ideas are more important than technical wizardry.

The video should be of sufficient quality to publish and to be used by the University for promotional purposes. The overall winner will receive a cash prize of £300 and there are also a number of great prizes for runners-up.

Lorna Jones, Director of Admissions and Student Recruitment, explained that the competition was aiming to capture unconventional views of Dundee - different ways of looking at the city and University that would appeal to would-be students.

'Think about the kind of video that you and your friends find interesting; we are looking for videos which will appeal to prospective students and be displaying the best ones on our YouTube channel,' she said.

'Remember that we're looking for personal discoveries - this doesn't have to be on a grand scale but could be as simple as a place you've discovered that has a great atmosphere, a new activity you've experienced or a new skill you've learnt. Or simply something which made you smile.'

'We're also happy to accept montages and animation as well as conventionally shot video. Quirky and original are both good!'

The competition follows on from last year’s highly successful ‘Picturing Dundee’ photography competition, which attracted dozens of entries from snappers who captured the essence of modern Dundee in a series of stunning images.

The closing date for entries to ‘What’s worth discovering @ Dundee’ is at noon on Friday, April 30th. More information, including full terms and conditions and details about how to enter and upload your video to YouTube, is available by visiting www.dundee.ac.uk/videocompetition.
