Dundee rated one of the best places in the world for postdocs to work

The College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee has once again been voted as one of the top international institutions for postdoctoral researchers to work in.

The annual survey in The Scientist magazine has two categories, one for US institutions and another for “the rest of the world'. Dundee came third in the latter category and is the only research institute in Scotland to be named in the list.

Professor Mike Ferguson, Dean of Research, said he was delighted that Dundee had been recognised as one of the top 10 academic international institutions for postdocs to work in.

'We do very well in these surveys, which are compiled from information submitted to The Scientist by individual scientists,' he said. 'It is extremely gratifying that our postdocs enjoy working here. They are a hugely important component of our research teams.

'Not only do they design and perform cutting-edge experiments but they also help to train PhD and undergraduate students and get involved in public outreach work. Our postdocs are very well organized and the College of Life Sciences Postdoc Association (CLSPA) is a very vibrant group that assists in the arrival and orientation of new postdocs and in their ongoing development.'

The results of the magazine’s survey come hot on the heels of the same publication’s October 2009 poll which ranked CLS third among all international institutions (outside the US) for Principal Investigators to work in life sciences research.

In total, 278 postdocs currently work at the College of Life Sciences.

The full top 10 is; Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, Horsham, UK, University College London, UK, University of Dundee, UK, Umea University, Sweden, Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, Basel, Switzerland, Biozentrum Basel, Switzerland, University of Cambridge, UK, Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia, Oeiras, Portugal, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, University of Toronto, Canada.
