University once again named one of the world's best workplaces
An international poll of scientists has once again named the University of Dundee as one of the best places in the world to work.
Dundee came sixth out of the top 10 international institutions from countries outside the United States in The Scientist magazine’s annual survey of more than 2,350 scientists.
Scientists are asked to rate their institution in a number of categories including research resources, infrastructure and environment, management and policies, and teaching and mentoring. They were also asked questions relating to pay, relationships with peers, and tenure and promotion prospects.
Overall, respondents focused on collaboration, team building and unique funding opportunities as important work environment factors. The University has performed consistently well in the poll, continually being named in the top 10 international institutions since the first survey in 2002.
Professor Mike Ferguson, Dean of Research at University’s College of Life Sciences, said he was delighted that Dundee had once again been recognised as one of the top 10 academic international institutions for scientists to work in.
He said, 'In the College of Life Sciences we strive to maintain a highly collegiate and collaborative environment with strong and accessible research infrastructure in, for example, proteomics, microscopy, cell-sorting, data analysis, screening and drug discovery and structural biology.'
'This helps Principal Investigators focus their scientific goals and provides them with the tools they need and the opportunities, when appropriate, to translate their science towards therapeutic, environmental or commercial outputs.'
'In addition, our well organised technological, technical, business development and clerical support teams deserve a huge mention as their can-do attitude provides our PIs with tremendous support.'
'I think a lot of satisfaction in working here comes from these aspects. However, nothing is perfect and complacency is not an option - so we will work hard to maintain our place in The Scientist’s Top10.'
This year’s survey rates Dundee in sixth place among international institution’s outside the US, behind Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (Germany), the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel), the University of Bristol (UK), the University of Groningen (Netherlands) and Dalhousie University (Canada).
The only other UK institution to feature in the Top 10 was Cambridge University (7th).
