Dundee artists contribute to national film and video exhibition

Dundee artists are to feature prominently in a major new exhibition of Scottish film and video, which will take place in Edinburgh in October and November.

Held at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, 'Running Time' is billed as the first exhibition dedicated exclusively to film and video in Scotland from the 1960s to the present day.

Through a unique collection of single screen film and video works, the fascinating history will be revealed through the work of more than 60 artists, who have provided a total of over 100 films for the exhibition.

In total, 14 artists connected to Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design have been selected for the programme. These include Luke Fowler, who studied at Duncan of Jordanstone, part of the University of Dundee, during the 1990's.

Luke uses archival footage to create atmospheric, sampled histories such as Pilgrimage from Scattered Points (2006), which will be shown at the exhibition.

Ashley Nieuwenhuizen, currently a postgraduate student on the Master of Fine Art course at the College will present 'Goldfish', (2009) a performance-video that features her pet fish!

Staff of the college are also represented with Pernille Spence, Gair Dunlop and the renowned environmental art duo Matthew Dalziel and Louise Scullion all having videos selected for the display.

Other highlights include seminal videos from the 1970s provided by David Hall and Stephen Partridge, which are featured in Duncan of Jordanstone's Rewind Archive. The exhibition has a changing weekly programme, and a different selection of artists and their work, will be highlighted each week.

Laura Simpson from the Exhibitions office of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design expressed her delight at seeing so many artists connected to the institution involved in the exhibition.

'That so many artists with a relationship with Duncan of Jordanstone have been chosen to take part is fabulous to see," she said. "The diversity and quality of work is sure to delight the audience.'

'The fact that work from students and well know artists from the College has been selected is testament to the quality of work being produced at all levels here.'

Admission is free to the exhibition, which will be open to the public between Saturday, October 17th and Sunday, November 22nd at The Dean Gallery, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh.
