Struan Stevenson MEP to address University Model UN Society
Struan Stevenson MEP, Vice President of the European Conservative and Reformist Group in the European Parliament, will visit the University of Dundee tomorrow to discuss Iran’s role in global politics.
Mr Stevenson’s talk, 'Iran under the Mullah’s - a threat to world peace?' is being hosted by the University of Dundee Model United Nations Society. The event has been organised to focus on what is, given the unrest which followed the recent disputed Iranian election and continuing tension over the country’s nuclear programme, a topical international issue.
Alexander Newell, President, Secretary-General and co-founder of the MUN Society said that the group sought to stimulate interest global world issues and an awareness of how they can be resolved through diplomacy and consensus.
'Mr Stevenson’s speech follows previous similar society events which included an international lawyer addressing delegates on the current state of the Middle East peace process, and academics focusing on Cuba under the reign of the Castro brothers,' he said.
Vice President and Treasurer, Cathy Devlin, added that 'the society’s unique programme aims to produce the world’s future world leaders through participation in conferences and mock sessions of the UN.'
Established in 2007, the MUN Society has attended United Nations Conferences in Edinburgh, London and Geneva. In October a delegation from the Society attended a Mock International UN conference at the University of Oxford. In addition to Dundee delegates passing resolutions in all their respective committees, Alexander Newell was named as best speaker in the 'International Court of Justice'.
Struan Stevenson’s talk takes place at Room 4.01, Scrymgeour Building from 7.30pm on Thursday, November 19th.
