George Galloway lends his support to Year of Democracy Campaign
One of Dundee’s most famous political sons will help boost a student-led campaign to stimulate interest and debate about politics when he appears at a special event later this week.
Firebrand Respect MP George Galloway will speak at Dundee University Students Association on Wednesday as part of DUSA’s ongoing Year of Democracy campaign.
The event will see Mr Galloway talk about what democracy means to him, and his own political experiences, in discussion with DUSA’s Vice President of Campaigns, Craig Kelly.
Mr Kelly said he hoped a large crowd would turn out to hear from one of the UK’s best-known, and most controversial, politicians.
'George is a fantastic and well seasoned speaker and our students will be very excited to pose their questions to him. Whatever your political persuasion, he’s one of the few politicians in our country that everyone has an opinion on,' he said.
'The point of this campaign is to discuss controversial issues and get students thinking about politics, and there are very few people who can do that as well as George Galloway. This event will be Galloway’s first visit to DUSA in over 20 years and a lot has changed since then. Some people feel that students have become more apathetic, but the point of this campaign is to show otherwise.'
The spread of democracy across the globe, and efforts to extend the right of participation and representation to each and every global citizen are important features of the Year of Democracy campaign.
High-profile speakers from across the political spectrum have been lined up to appear at debates and other events will allow students to participate and voice their own particular opinion, as well as hearing those put forward by the guest speakers.
Other speakers who will be partaking in the year long campaign include former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mozzam Begg, secret services whistle blower Katharine Gunn and veteran activist Tariq Ali.
George Galloway will be appearing at DUSA from 5.15pm on Wednesday, November 18th. More information is available by visiting www.yearofdemocracy.co.uk, emailing DUSA President Andrew Smith at president@dusa.co.uk, or calling 01382 386002.
