Climate change challenges and opportunities

Jim Mather MSP, Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism, will visit Dundee later this week to take part in a conference examining the challenges and opportunities arising from climate change

As the world gears up for the historic UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen next month, the University’s Centre for Energy, Petroleum & Mineral Law & Policy (CEPMLP) are hosting the event to look at the issues surrounding one of the most pressing problems facing the world.

‘Scotland’s Opportunities Amidst International Challenges’ takes place at the Dalhousie Building from 9am-10.30am on Wednesday, November 25th. Mr Mather will discuss Scotland’s energy role in the UK and answer questions from delegates in attendance, while Peter Cameron, Director of Research and Professor of International Energy Law and Policyat CEPMLP will cover Scotland’s role in international energy.

Professor Cameron said that Scotlandis an energy rich country with the resources, skills, technology and ambition to be a world leader in sustainable energy.

'The urgency behind international challenges on climate change and energy security is growing by the month but it looks like the real action will take place at the national level - at least in the first instance,' he said.

'Scotland is already ahead of what is likely to emerge from the Copenhagen meeting next month, but can it deliver on its ambitious targets for emissions reductions? Scotland has unique geographical advantages which ought to be reflected in UK energy policy; it makes sense for Holyrood to be taking the lead in this.'

Scotland can point to real and substantial progress in a number of areas but also faces a number of challenges. The five critical international energy issues to be discussed at the conference are:

The summit at Copenhagen. The Economy. Energy Security. Sustainability. Cost.

A general discussion of the issues raised will follow the main presentations. Anyone interested in attending the event should contact Hugh Gunn (h.j.b.gunn@dundee.ac.uk / 01382 385871) or Nina Staebler (nina.staebler@scotland.gsi.gov.uk / 0300 244 1079).
