Teaching award winners to share experiences
Academics from the University of Dundee, whose contribution to teaching at the institution has seen them win awards, will discuss their experiences and share examples of good practice at special Learning & Teaching Lunches.
Taking place in November and December, the events will see winners of the University’s Teaching Awards discuss issues relating to teaching, and the innovative techniques they have deployed to enhance the learning experience for students.
The first event takes place at Dalhousie Building room 1G06 on Wednesday, November 25th, when attendees will hear from:
- 12.30pm - Professor Mono Chatterji (Senate Award for Excellence in Teaching winner).
- 1.00pm - Andy Milligan (Honorary Graduates' Award for Innovative Teaching winner).
- 1.30pm - Dr Mhairi Towler and Janice Aitken (Honorary Graduates' Award for Innovative Teaching winners).
The second Learning & Teaching Lunch takes place at Dalhousie room 1G05 on Wednesday, December 2nd, when the speakers will be:
- 12.30pm - Allan Jones (Chancellor's Award for Lifetime Contribution to Teaching winner).
- 1.00pm - Dr Nicholas Brewer and Margaret Adamson (Honorary Graduates' Award for Innovative Teaching winners).
- 1.30pm - Dr Fraser Smith (Senate Award for Excellence in Teaching winner).
Principal Professor Pete Downes said his plans for the future development of the University placed high value on excellence in learning and teaching.
'I am proud of our high standing in the National Student Survey and International Student Barometer,' he said.
'It is therefore important that high quality teaching is being recognised and celebrated through the recently initiated Teaching Awards. I am pleased to see award-winners spreading the word about teaching excellence at these Learning & Teaching Lunches, where they will be the guests of honour.'
The Honorary Graduates’ Award for Innovative Teaching, Senate Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Chancellor’s Award for Lifetime Contribution to Teaching recognise different aspects of achievement, and are presented on an annual basis.
The Honorary Graduates’ Award for Innovative Teaching has been presented annually since 1994, providing the opportunity to recognise and reward innovation in any aspect of teaching within the University.
The Senate Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Chancellor's Award for Lifetime Contribution to Teaching have been developed as part of the University's Learning & Teaching Strategy.
These awards reflect a commitment to recognising and rewarding achievement in excellence in teaching, mentoring new colleagues in their roles as teachers in higher education, pedagogical research, and the demonstration of effective leadership in this field of academic practice.
Students are encouraged to take an active role in the Senate award by nominating their lecturers. The winners of the Chancellor's Award are nominated by individual Schools within the University, and nominations are endorsed at College level.
Lunch will be provided for attendees at each event, and places can be booked by contacting Julie Brennan at apd@dundee.ac.uk.
