Professor Dame Louise Johnson FRS, of the University of Oxford, has delivered the 25th Peter Garland Lecture at the University of Dundee.

The Peter Garland Lecture is the most important lecture held in the College of Life Sciences and has been held every year since 1985. The lecture is named after the University’s first Professor of Biochemistry, who was instrumental in developing Life Sciences at Dundee over the period 1970-1984.

Professor Johnson is one of the world’s leading experts in the field of structural biology. She delivered a lecture titled `‘The structural basis for regulation by protein phosphorylation’ to a packed house of around 300 people in the College of Life Sciences.

Professor Johnson also presented this year’s Howard Elder prizes, which are made each year to the postgraduate students or postdoctoral researchers in the College of Life Sciences who publish the best paper of the year in a subject relevant to cancer research. This year’s winners were Dr Xu Huang, until recently a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Professor Dario Alessi's, and Dr Jonathan Ouelet, a postdoctoral researcher and member of David Lilley's Cancer Research UK Nucleic Acid Structure Research Group.
