Dundee Students to exhibit at prestigious Royal Scottish Academy Exhibition
Eleven artists from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD), Dundee, have been
selected to exhibit at the prestigious RSA New Contemporaries exhibition in April 2010; giving the
chosen graduates the opportunity to showcase a selection of new work, including painting,
sculpture, film making, photography, printmaking, architecture and installation.
The Eleven artists were selected from the Dundee Degree Show by members of the Royal Scottish
Academy (lead by Joyce W Cairns RSA) and two representatives of DJCAD. Over the coming months
the RSA will visit the Degree Shows of all the main colleges of art and architecture in Scotland,
selecting a total of 60+ of the finest emerging artists.
RSA New Contemporaries represents the RSA's commitment to supporting and presenting the best
contemporary work in Scotland and the RSA team will be working closely with the artists and
architects towards developing a lasting relationship in the lead up to the exhibition and beyond.
The inaugural RSA New Contemporaries exhibition took place in February 2009 with seven DJCAD
graduates winning awards; including Stuart Lorimer, winner of the £5,000 Stevenson Award for
Painting and Ashley Nieuwenhuizen, who won the RSA Sir William Gillies Bequest Award worth £2,000.
Colin Greenslade, RSA Programme Director, comments: 'The positioning of this exhibition is fast
becoming one of the most important initiatives for emerging artists in Scotland each year, enabling
a 'first exhibition' opportunity for some 60+ emergent artists annually. As well as developing a
strategic platform for new work and highlighting the role of the RSA in supporting new talent,
the exhibition is an unique opportunity to see the best of Scotland's up-and-coming artists
and architects under one roof.'
Two of the selected artists, Jessica Ramm and Jamie Fitzpatrick, have also recently been awarded
RSA John Kinross Scholarships along with eight other final year students from across Scotland.
John Kinross RSA was a renowned architect who was greatly influenced by Florence, the beautiful
Italian city which has been an inspiration to generations of artists and architects.
The £2,000 scholarship is intended to assist Fine Art and Architecture students in Scotland
to live and study in Florence for a period of up to three months, providing an incredible
opportunity for young artists. The RSA also arranges a galleries and museums pass for the
students allowing them free access to the city's artistic and historical treasures.
The Dundee Degree Show continues until 6 June at Vision @ Seabraes, Dundee, and admission is free.
