Dundee and St Andrews to host major primary care conference

The universities of Dundee and St Andrews will later this week jointly host one of the UK's premier health and science conferences.

The 38th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society for Academic Primary (SAPC) takes place at the United College, St Salvator’s Quadrangle at St Andrews from July 8-10. More than 300 delegates from across the UK will take part in the showcase meeting of research and education in primary care.

They will discuss a wide range of topics relating to scientific research and its implications for primary care at the conference, which will be chaired by Professor Frank Sullivan from the University of Dundee.

Professor Sullivan said, 'This meeting is an excellent opportunity to hear from the front- line: where patients meet the health service. Decisions made, or not, in primary care have enormous implications so the best research and teaching in this setting are crucial for everyone'.

St Andrews Principal Dr Louise Richardson will welcome delegates to the event, and keynote speeches will be delivered by:

  • Professor Phil Hannaford, University of Aberdeen.
  • Professor John Spencer, University of Newcastle.
  • Professor Peter Rubin, Chair GMC and University of Nottingham.
  • Professor David Haslam, President RCGP.

In addition, there will be 138 oral presentations that were selected for inclusion from work submitted to the conference during the peer review process. Ninety five posters, four workshops and five special interest groups/specialist workshops will also take place.

The Annual Scientific Meeting is hosted by the Universities of Dundee and St Andrews, and the Scottish Schools of Primary Care on behalf of SAPC. Further information is available at www.sapc.ac.uk/09.
