Green energy success for Dundee students
Ecologically aware students from the University of Dundee have had their efforts rewarded at the prestigious Green Energy awards in Edinburgh.
The event, hosted by the Scottish Renewables Forum, was attended by over 700 representatives from across the renewables sector. Dundeestudent Geoff Wood was judged to have submitted the ‘Best Student Project’, while his classmates Karen Fox and Gavin Murphy were also short-listed for the award.
The category attracted strong competition from universities across Scotland. All three Dundee students were representatives of the University’s flagship Renewable Energy and Environmental Modelling Masters programme.
Geoff investigated the likely impact of the reform of the Renewables Obligation order, which details the legal requirement of the electricity industry to generate escalating percentages of their energy output from renewable sources.
Following graduation least year, Dundee-born Geoff (26) is now studying for a PhD at the University.
Course director Dr David Rodley, from the University’s School of Engineering, Physics and Mathematics congratulated the three students for their efforts, saying, 'We have had students make it to the finals for this award in each of the last three years.'
'To have all of our nominees short-listed this time around is obviously a tremendous tribute to the talents of our students, to the hard work and dedication of all the staff involved and to the quality of the programme in general. I am absolutely delighted for Geoff.'
The award is open to all students at Scottish universities undertaking a course or project that contributes to the understanding and future of renewable energy in Scotland. Engineering, policy, economics, law and environmental sciences are just some of the subjects directly relevant to the development of renewable energy.
