Garden to go native and host 'pow-wow'
The University of Dundee Botanic Garden will be the unusual venue for a 'Pow-Wow on the Prairie' later this week.
The event rounds off a week of activities held to celebrate the Garden’s new Native American area and takes place between 6pm and 8pm on Friday, August 7th.
A cowboy barbeque, Native American storytelling, bonfire, guided walk and explorers trail are all planned for the evening while a Native American fancy dress competition will also take place. Admission costs £5 for adults and £3 for children.
The Garden’s Native American section shows off the wide range of species, now commonly used as garden plants in this country, which originated in North America. The section also explores the link between Scotland and North America, as many of the collectors who introduced new plants to Europe were Scottish.
Also marking the opening of the new section is a programme of events aimed at school-age children, which takes place between 1pm and 4pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.
Young visitors will be able to enjoy storytelling sessions, mural painting, and the chance to make their own tipi and dream catcher as well as paying a visit to the skunks at the Garden. Normal entry prices (£3 for adults and £2 for children) apply.
