Entries for writing anthology welcomed

Submissions are now being sought for the latest edition of a highly successful literary anthology backed by the University of Dundee.

Following the success of the fourth edition of New Writing Dundee, the publication - which has helped dozens of budding writers get their poetry and prose into print - is now taking submissions for the 2010 issue.

Last year’s NWD was launched at a Literary Salon featuring renowned author Ali Smith, which took place at Dundee Contemporary Arts in June. For the first time the publication was available to buy through online retailers Amazon as well as through Borders Dundee store and from the University.

The anthology has now gone through several print runs, and several of the writers who featured in it read extracts from their submissions to a packed crowd at Dundee Literary Festival in June.

The 2009 edition of NWD featured work by Douglas Dunn, Tom Bryan, Andrew Murray Scott, and Amy Krouse Rosenthal as well as an interview with Peter Hobbes, as well as from first time and amateur writers. The 2010 issue plans to match such prestigious talent along with accepting submissions from the general public.

Rachel Marsh, editor of New Writing Dundee, said, 'Last year's NWD proved that Dundee can attract and publish a high calibre of writers, whether they are experienced, published authors or first time scribes.'

'We hope to continue with that tradition of success in the upcoming issue, which will once again feature some award-winning authors. However, our main objective is to discover unpublished talent who need a bit of a kickstart to their careers.'

'We’d love to receive submissions from writers who might have been reluctant to offer up their work for publication up until now. We want to see writing of various styles, genres, subjects and voices in hopes of finding pieces which will create an anthology that provides a huge boost to the Dundee literary scene.'

Submissions of stories, chapters or short drama should not exceed 2500 words, while poems should be 25 lines or less in length. Entries must be submitted by November 1st, 2009, and should be sent to newwritingdundee@dundee.ac.uk.

All themes and genres will be accepted, and further information about entry guidelines is available at www.literarydundee.co.uk/newwriting.htm.

Authors from all over the globe are encouraged to enter, as NWD’s remit is to highlight the international publishing potential Dundee has to offer.
