Sir Clement Freud
The University notes with great sadness the death of Sir Clement Freud, the writer, broadcaster, and politician who served as Rector in Dundee in the 1970s.
Sir Clement died at his desk yesterday at his home in London, nine days short of his 85th birthday, his family have announced.
Sir Clement was elected Rector at Dundee in 1974 and was subsequently re-elected for a second term three years later. A popular figure with students, he is fondly remembered by many of those who studied or worked at the University in the 1970s.
David MacLeod, current President of Dundee University Students Association, said, 'From everything I have heard about his time here, Sir Clement was a much-loved figure who served the needs of the students well. He was clearly a remarkable man who brought great wit to everything he did, and Dundee clearly benefitted from having him as Rector here.'
Sir Clement also later served as Rector of the University of St Andrews.
