Maths finds the right formula

Maths seems to have found the right formula for success with a surge in the numbers of students signing up to study the subject at the University of Dundee this year.

Dr Fordyce Davidson, Convener of the Programme Board for Mathematics at Dundee, said he was delighted to see nearly sixty students taking the first year Mathematics course.

'It is very encouraging to see that mathematics is such an attractive option for school leavers - this is the highest intake of students we have had for 10 years,' said Dr Davidson.

'Mathematics is becoming more and more popular as students realise that it opens up so many exciting job opportunities. Our maths graduates go on to be financial high flyers, work in government or commercial security or are helping to drive the explosive development of communications and information technology.'

'Research in the Division is centred on applied mathematics - using mathematics to better understand the physical and biological world around us. Topics range from the dynamics of the Sun to modelling cancer growth.'

'Our research plays a big part in keeping our undergraduate programme at the cutting edge of what is new and exciting in mathematics today, and that ranges across a huge amount of subjects,' said Dr Davidson.

The Division also teaches mathematics to over 250 engineering, science and computing students at the University.
