University museums open doors for Show Scotland

The annual Show Scotland "big events weekend" coordinated by Museums Galleries Scotland gets underway at the University of Dundee tomorrow (Friday 2 May) with an open afternoon at the Tayside Medical History Museum in the Foyer of the Medical School at Ninewells.

Visitors will be able to enjoy guided tours of the exhibitions and storerooms at the museum and find out about Dundee’s X-Ray pioneer and how surgery was performed in the days before anaesthetics. The open afternoon is free and takes place between 2pm and 4pm.

On Saturday 3 May and Sunday 4 May curator Matthew Jarron will be conducting guided tours of Hawkhill House, the 18th Century farmhouse building which now houses the main stores and offices of the University’s Museum Services. Visitors to this fascinating historic building in Hawkhill Place will be able to see highlights from the University’s extraordinary collections of art, science and natural history.

The tours take place between 3pm and 4pm both days. They are free but booking is required.

On Monday 5 May the D’Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum will mark its re-opening with an afternoon of walks and guided tours. Founded in the 1880s the museum has a new home in the Carnelley Building. The afternoon, which runs from 2 to 4pm, is free but advance booking is required.
