NCR supports University of Dundee students

Undergraduate students from the University of Dundee have been working with NCR to look at ways of improving ATM machines.

Mechanical Engineering & Mechatronics and Innovative Product Design students were set the task of devising ways to improve the way banknotes get from the safe to the customer at the ATM. They looked at suction, separation devices and environmental design.

The students were helped by NCR engineers and used the facilities at NCR, who are a leading global company specialising in ATMs, retail systems and IT services. This allows them to put into action the skills they have learned in basic engineering sciences, mechanics and materials and computer aided design and simulation.

The results were presented to representatives of NCR.

Dr John White, NCR Chief Engineer, says, The students have come up with a number of interesting ideas. The computer aided design and simulation skills are impressive. We will look into the feasibility of these ideas and we are planning to set up a number of summer projects and Honours year projects for some of them to continue to work with us.

Dr Robert Keatch, Head of Division, says, "This is an excellent opportunity for the students to be exposed to an industrial environment and the chance for the students of a summer placement in a company. These industrial projects set by NCR allow the students to take the initiative and apply what they have learned in the classroom and apply this to a real industrial problem. The engineering and problem solving skills each group need to complete their task is a great experience and will be a valuable asset in their future careers. We are very grateful for the continued support of NCR and look forward to further opportunities for R&D collaboration."
