Constructive Mismatch

Preview: Friday 14 March 5-7pm
Related Event: Panel Discussion : Friday 14 March, 3.30pm

Exhibition dates: 15 March - 28 March

Constructive Mismatch is an exhibition of ten students from the Academy of Fine Arts, Hamburg. The show has been curated by Hamburg artist Martin Werthmann who will also be exhibiting. Scott Shepherd and Tommy Garvie, both Fine Art Students at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design will be hosting the project and the students while they are in Dundee. For most of the students this is the first time that they have visited Scotland.

Martin Werthmann, the exhibition curator who is a student in Hamburg said :’This exhibition is a good opportunity to build a connection with another art school in Europe. The most important thing for me is to meet other artists and exchange ideas about art’.

Martin Werthmann’s large scale, over three metres wide, woodcuts merge billboard type imagery with a traditional printing technique. One of his pieces entitled ‘One Room’ shows a smiling clown face alongside a man in a bowler hat.

Another student artist in the group Ole Aselmann works with performance and video and he will present five videos. The work shows previous actions and performances Aselmann has organised or taken part in including ‘Running Man in Flock of Sheep’ where he ran for two hours on a treadmill in a field of sheep.

The project has prompted questions about differences and similarities in art education throughout Europe. Some of these questions will be raised in a public panel discussion taking place on Friday the 14th March at 3.30pm.

We have invited Nicole Heidke, an artist and former Bauhaus professor and Gavin Renwick, Chair of Art & Policy at DJCAD, to join the curator, Martin Werthmann and DJCAD student Stuart McAdam, who has also studied in the Netherlands, on the panel. The discussion will be chaired by prominent DJCAD Professor Gareth Fisher.
