CEPMLP publishes book on international competition for resources

University of Dundee’s Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) and Dundee University Press will be releasing `International Competition for Resources: The Role of Law, the State and of Markets' in March 2008.

International Competition, edited by Philip Andrews-Speed, Director of CEPMLP, examines the evolving and current state of the energy and minerals industry from the perspective of competition for resources, focusing on the role of law, the state and markets. This collection of six papers is the product of CEPMLP’s 30th anniversary conference in 2007.

Andrews-Speed’s introduction reflects upon the economic and resource trends in the energy and resource industries over the last 30 years, drawing on the similarities in world affairs between then and now while highlighting the differences in the economic, political and legal climate in the competition for resources.

Paul Stevens’ "Oil wars: resource nationalism and the Middle East" and Phillip Crowson’s "Trends in the global mining industry: rocket or roller-coaster?" both look at the resource cycle and future respectively for oil and gas and for minerals from the economic perspective.

"From producer to consumer: the UK’s changing energy strategy in the EU" by Peter Cameron illustrates the challenges and constraints a country faces in the transition from being an energy exporter to an energy importer.

Thomas Wälde’s "The rule of law and the resource industries’ cycle" and Ana Elizabeth Bastida’s "Mining law in the context of development: an overview" examines the changing role of law in the international resources industries and the impact from shifts in the political and economic ideology.

International Competition addresses a range of important and underlying issues facing the energy and mineral industry from economic and legal viewpoints. It also provokes thought on how to adapt solutions to tackling future challenges in the deceptively static resource cycle.

International Competition for Resources: The Role of Law, the State and of Markets will be available for sale online from March 2008. For more information, please contact Rona Carstairs, CEPMLP Information Services Manager at r.m.carstairs@dundee.ac.uk or see www.cepmlp.org/gateway.
