Triumph over adversity for Heather
When Heather Neil crosses the stage to collect her degree at the University of Dundee graduation ceremony today (Wednesday June 18th) it will represent a triumph over extreme adversity.
Heather (45), from Broughty Ferry, is graduating with a BA Hons in Social Work, marking the end of four years of study during which she has had to overcome personal tragedy and serious illness.
Heather’s husband Jim died suddenly after a massive heart attack in May 2003, at a time when the couple’s children Hamish and Rosie were just five and two respectively.
Heather subsequently started her University studies in September 2004 with the support of her employer Angus Council, but within two months she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Heather had to take time out for treatment until resuming her studies in September 2005.
Since then she has remained clear of the disease, leaving her to contend with studying for her degree and bringing up Hamish and Rosie.
"It certainly hasn’t been easy and there was a lot for us to get over in the space of a couple of years, but I am here now and delighted that I have got my degree," said Heather.
"It does sound terribly tragic, but for as bad as it has been at times, I have received tremendous support from my family and friends who have done a lot to help me get to this stage."
"Angus Council have also been fantastic in supporting me throughout, funding me through University and generally giving me a lot of reassurance, and the staff and my fellow students at the University have been really good."
"I think what my experience shows is that it is possible to do this no matter what life throws at you. And it is a huge thrill for me to get a degree and to have Hamish and Rosie watching on."
Having completed her studies Heather is going back to work for Angus Council as part of their Childcare Assessment team.
