Don't Miss the Inaugural Tay Games Varsity Challenge Trophy

Students from the University of Dundee will square up to their rivals at the University of Abertay Dundee on Wednesday 6 February 2008.

Around 200 students will be competing in eight different sports aiming to take home the first ever Tay Games Varsity Challenge Trophy.

Teams from both universities will contest matches in rugby, football, Gaelic football, basketball, volleyball, netball, hockey and golf at a number of venues in and around the city.

After the dust settles and the winner is declared the teams will meet up in the Sports Bar at Abertay's Student Centre for the trophy presentation and a well-earned drink to celebrate their success or drown their sorrows until next year.

Abertay's Sports Development Officer Ian Lowe has been involved in organising the first Tay Games Varsity Challenge Trophy.

Ian said: "It's taken a lot of hard work to put the challenge together but all the effort will be worthwhile when the first of the competitions get going."

"Both universities have a long tradition of sporting excellence and, of course, a healthy rivalry."

"The Tay Games Varsity Challenge will give sporty students from each university the chance to show their true colours in a fight to the final whistle, or the 19th hole for the golfers."

"It's going to be a great day and I hope spectators will turn out in force to cheer their side on."

Dundee Universities Sports Union President Anna Anderson has been working hand in hand with Ian Lowe in organising the first Tay Games Varsity Challenge.

Anna said: "It has been a long awaited event for the two Universities and is sure to be a good contest."

"It will be a truly awesome moment in both Universities sporting history when we walk out in our colours to start the first of hopefully many city student sporting competitions."

"All the organising is underway, it's now down to the teams and their spectators to show us what they're made of."
