The University of Dundee has created a new Chair in Cancer Biology in honour of one of the University's staunchest supporters - local charity fundraiser, philanthropist and businessman Dr Pat McPherson.

Through his business life, charity work and community interests Dr McPherson has made a huge impact on both the city of Dundee and the University, not least through his tireless efforts in helping raise millions of pounds for the Ninewells Cancer Campaign.

"There have been a small number of very special people who have had a disproportionate effect on the growth and development of the University of Dundee," said Sir Alan Langlands, Principal of the University.

"Pat McPherson is one of these people - someone who has been an invaluable help to the University over much of the life of the institution, has inspired scientists of international standing to come to Dundee, has contributed so much - directly and indirectly - through his charitable work for the University and its partner NHS Tayside, and who has driven key projects in medicine and biological sciences."

"In recognition of his wholehearted, sustained and loyal friendship and support over many years, including his immense contribution to driving the Ninewells Cancer Campaign, the University of Dundee warmly and formally acknowledges the contribution of Pat by creating the Dr Pat McPherson Chair in Cancer Biology."

Sir Alan said it was the University's intention to award the Chair to a leading scientist, perhaps a new recruit to Dundee, who shows the qualities of determination, integrity and selflessness that epitomise the influence of Pat McPherson on the life and work of the University.

Dr McPherson, one of Dundee's best-known post-war industrialists, purchased the then F. H. Wright Dental Manufacturing Company-at the time the smallest dental company in the UK-in 1946. His dedication and commitment saw the firm surge in size to become one of the UK's biggest in the dental industry.

His influence has been felt across the wider business community including through his non-executive directorships and his involvement with the Institute of Directors.

His charity work and community interests have included the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children, Tenovus Scotland, the Tayside Body Scanner Appeal, Rotary International and the Ninewells Cancer Campaign.

Dr McPherson was awarded an honorary degree by the University in 1986, at which time he was described in the laureation as "an outstanding son of Dundee".

Said Dr McPherson: "This is a wonderful gesture. I am honoured and delighted that the University has chosen to create this chair in my name."
