Dundee Civic Award 2008
Garrie Watson, from Dundee, has been named the winner of the Dundee Civic Award 2008, awarded by Town and Regional Planning at the University of Dundee.
Garrie was one of three third-year students - alongside Oonagh Baxter (Co Down, Northern Ireland) and Fraser MacKenzie (Forfar) - who were selected to present their proposals for the future of a number of key industrial sites along Dundee's Kingsway route.
The students were commissioned by Dundee City Council to prepare planning guidance designed to release the potential of a number of prominent industrial sites along the Kingsway, including the former Valentines site at Dunsinane and the former ABB Nitran site at east Kingsway. With recent closures, these sites have become vitally important if future employment and investment in the city is to be assured.
Garrie's winning submission included the creation of a stand-alone exhibition and conference centre at the site of the Tesco distribution centre at Kingsway West, together with improvements to the sites at ABB Nitran and Valentine's, involving landscaping and demolition.
He was presented with a cheque for £150 by Councillor Fraser Macpherson, Dundee City Council Planning and Transportation Convener, and Director of Planning and Transportation, Mike Galloway.
Mr Galloway is himself a former winner of the Award.
