Dentists from across the globe will reunite in Dundee today (thurs), more than 50 years since they graduated.
Thirteen former dental students will be shown round the new Dental School, including Grace Suckling, who graduated in 1944. She has travelled from New Zealand, where she now lives, for the reunion.
Today’s event was organised by Professor Sir David Mason who graduated in 1952 and was awarded an Honorary Degree by the University in 1993.
David Mason was Professor of Oral Medicine, University of Glasgow and Dean of Dental Education (1980-90). He was President of the General Dental Council (1989-94). His main research interests have been in salivary glands in health and disease, the oral manifestation of systemic disease and dental education. He has published widely and written a number of books on these subjects.
He was awarded an Honorary Degree by the University of Dundee on 16th July 1993, and since retiring in 1994, he remained an Emeritus Professor of Oral Medicine. He has had a keen interest in dental history and has researched the lives and careers of some notable persons in the world of Dentistry such as John and William Hunter, Oswald Fergus and Willoughby Miller.
The dentists will be met by William Saunders, Dean of the Dental School, and shown the Dental School and Hospital.
