Parallax - Two perspectives on Orkney and beyond
New exhibition opening October 6th
Jeremy Baster
Roland Ashcroft
6th Oct - 3rd Nov 2007
Bradshaw Gallery
This exhibition of the works of Roland Ashcroft and Jeremy Baster focuses on the parallels between their different visions of Orkney. What binds their two perspectives together is an appreciation of Orkney and its landscapes. Common themes appear in their works, reflecting the timeless features of the islands: stones and rocks, lighthouses, dykes and stone structures, birds, and the flotsam and jetsam from the oceans and seas around the islands.
Roland’s perspective is that of a visitor to Orkney and is the latest in several island based projects. Jeremy’s perspective is that of a resident of Orkney, and is informed by recent visits to Mexico and Japan.
The two artists work in different media. Roland, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Interior and Environmental Design at Duncan of Jordanstone, has been producing photography based work for ten years or so. He has exhibited widely both in the UK and abroad, and has worked collaboratively with others including sound artist Pete Nixon. Jeremy is a printmaker who makes relief prints, using lino or wood. The prints in this exhibition are made using Japanese wood block materials and techniques and are printed on Japanese paper.
Jeremy is a Director with Orkney Islands Council, and makes prints in the Soulisquoy Printmakers workshop in Kirkwall, and has exhibited in group exhibitions in Scotland. He also has an interest in artists’ books, and two examples of his earlier work are included in this exhibition.
