Sheena Wellington to take part in an evening of songs from the Union of 1707

University of Dundee, Chaplaincy Centre
Saturday, 5 May 2007
7.30pm

The University of Dundee Student History Society will present ‘Ane end of ane old song’: An evening of music and song from the Union of 1707 and its aftermath, with performers including Sheena Wellington.

The Treaty of Union, inaugurated on 1 May 1707, remains one of the most controversial episodes in Scotland’s history, a fact reflected in the many contrasting poems and songs originating in this period.

For Scottish supporters of the Union it secured the Revolution settlement, Presbyterian Church Government and the Protestant Hanoverian succession and for their opponents it marked the end of Scotland’s.

The Jacobites made several unsuccessful attempts to restore the House of Stuart, the movement’s ambitions and lingering sympathy for their cause revealed in a rich collection of Jacobite ballads and verse.

The concert, ‘Ane end of ane old song’, draws on these assorted works and divergent views to highlight the more colourful aspects of eighteenth-century Scots political life. The event is timely, being staged only a few days after the three hundredth anniversary of the Union’s beginning and the latest elections to a new Scottish Parliament.

With performers including Sheena Wellington, Scotland’s leading traditional singer, Mark Ashmore, Nicola Cowmeadow, Graeme Stevenson and Ian Grieve, you are warmly invited to what will surely be a lively and entertaining evening.

Tickets cost £5.00 and are still available from Dr Derek J. Patrick d.j.patrick@dundee.ac.uk
