Dundee Guildry present awards to students
Five post-graduate students at the University of Dundee's School of Town and
Regional Planning will be presented with travel bursaries by the Guildry
Incorporation of Dundee tomorrow morning. (Wedneday May 23).
The MSc students in European Urban Conservation will receive awards
totalling £2000 from the Lord Dean of Guild Mr Robert W Burns, during a
presentation at the University at 10:30am.
The awards will enable the students to fund fieldtrips in preparation for
their final MSc dissertations.
Mr Burns and members of the Guildry will have the opportunity to meet
students and staff involved in the EUC programme and see examples of student
work which will be exhibited at the reception.
Until 1947, the Lord Dean of the Guild acted as the planning authority in
Dundee.
A direct descendant of Dundee's Merchant Guild, the Guildry is over 800
years old. Its charter was granted to the merchants of Dundee by King John,
giving the merchants the right to trade, free of all dues, with any port in
England except London - and - is the first document to refer to the City of
Dundee.
The European Urban Conservation scheme has been running since 1991 and helps
graduates from a variety of backgrounds with the aim of training them in
historic building and urban area conservation.
NOTES TO EDITORS
The names of the winning students will be announced at the reception.
The reception will be held at the Room 8007 in the Matthew Building at 10:30am.
