Diabetes research at the University of Dundee will be boosted by the presentation of a cheque for £6500 from the Dundee & District group of Diabetes UK.
The Dundee & District voluntary group have adopted two projects at the University, one led by Dr Hari Hundal and Kei Sakamoto and the other by Professor Dario Alessi and Dr Calum Sutherland. Group secretary Avril McGinness and some of the other volunteers will visit the researchers at the University's College of Life Sciences on Wednesday June 13th, when they will present the cheque and be given the chance to see some of the laboratory work being carried out by the research teams.
"We are delighted to be able to make the donations to these research projects," said Mrs McGinness. "We are always striving to try and make sure that money raised in the local area can be used in the local area so it is great to be involved with the work at the University."
Diabetes UK funds £6million of research every year with over £1million of that directed towards Scotland. The University of Dundee is a centre of excellence for diabetes research, with 27 research teams currently working on the disease.
The University is also engaged in a £3 million fundraising scheme for the Diabetes Research Campaign, which aims to improve clinical research facilities at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School in Dundee, and extend clinical research programmes in Perth and Kinross and Angus.
