New Exhibition - 2.32

Preview - Friday 16th February, 5-7pm
Lower Foyer Gallery, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design

‘2.32’ is an exhibition showcasing twenty art students from Time Based Art in their third year of studies here at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. The number 2.32 is a unit of time, which the students have chosen as a common link to each of the individual works.

Dawn Campbell has made a sound piece of the same walk that her ancestors made one hundred years earlier when they worked in the Jute mills of the old Hawkhill. The distance that she walked is exactly 2.32 kilometres. Since this area is all demolished now she aims to recapture family memories of the area that she is living in today.

‘Goblin Story’ is a piece by Gemma Mannion, where two TV screens show Gemma telling a story about Goblins, in one screen she is a two and a half years old and in the other she is a twenty year old. Gemma has switched over the voices of these two videos to produce a rather unsettling effect where the young image of Gemma has a twenty-year-old voice and the old image of Gemma has the two and a half year old voice.

‘2.32’ is an exhibition of a large and varied range of work, including photographs and sculptural installation, in addition to the video pieces. On the opening night there will be two live performances. Jonathon Adam, who has been drumming every day for seven years, will do a live drumming performance for 2 minutes and 32 seconds. This performance will be the last time that Jonathon plays the drums for two weeks, three days and two hours. A video diary during this time without drumming will document the effects this has on him and his art work. Daniel Pike and Scott Barrie have planned a video and sound performance to demonstrate their experience of the environment. Using video footage from skating competitions around the world and sound recordings taken in London, they will employ techniques used in Turntablism and Video Djing.
