Awards for university lecturers
Two Professors from the University of Dundee will be honoured at a Royal Society of Edinburgh award ceremony today.
Professor Sue Black, Head of Anatomy and Forensic Anthropology at the College of Life Sciences and Professor Mark Chaplain, Chair in Mathematical Biology, in the Department of Mathematics will have their exceptional contributions to the Young People’s Programme of the Royal Society Edinburgh applauded.
The programme introduces children to topical issues, particularly those arising from new technologies, such as cloning, mobile phones and other issues such as diet and obesity. They use fun lectures and master classes - providing opportunities for hands-on experiments - and discussions of topical issues and the scheme runs throughout the country.
Professor Black is committed to communicating to young people and the public. She is a regular contributor to the RSE Talk Science Schools' lecture programme, gives Startup Science workshops for young people and was the RSE Christmas Lecturer in 2005. In addition Sue sits on the RSE Young People's Committee.
Mark Chaplain involves children in Maths masterclasses, trying to raise their level of interest in numbers in a fun way.
Sue Black says "I work with schools and their pupils to introduce them to forensic anthropology and I help them to question identity. It is a real honour to be given this award and I hope it encourages people from all disciplines to give their time to young people."
