Mervyn King visits University of Dundee
The University of Dundee today welcomed the Governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King during his first visit to the city.
The Governor was shown round the laboratories of the Division of Signal Transduction Therapy and the Drug Discovery Unit in the College of Life Sciences, where scientists are working on the first stages of drugs to treat diseases such as diabetes, cancer and tropical diseases.
Sir Alan Langlands, Principal of the University, Professor Pete Downes, Vice Principal of the University and Head of the College of Life Sciences and Professor Sir Philip Cohen introduced Mervyn King to the University, explaining the work that takes place within the College of Life Sciences.
Mr King said, "I am incredibly excited about being here. I was in academia myself for many years and I can tell when there is an intellectual buzz about a University, where important things are happening and I can feel that at Dundee University. The work that is being done here matters, not just to Dundee and Scotland, but to as far away as Africa."
"This is a place that matters, and the people working here know that."
