Conference examines Dundee role in establishing Labour culture

The effect of events in Tayside on the development of workplace culture and politics will be examined at a conference at the University of Dundee on Saturday October 28th.

'A good lesson from Dundee: New perspectives on labour in Tayside' is a joint conference of the Scottish Labour History Society (SLHS) and the Abertay Historical Society.

It will present new research looking at the ways that workplace culture, politics, and women's representation nationally and internationally have been influenced by events in Tayside.

Alan Bell, Vice-Chair of the Scottish Labour History Society, said, "The SLHS was established to promote the investigation of the history of ordinary people and the Abertay Historical Society is the premier historical society in Tayside."

"In combining to hold this conference the rich legacy of Dundee's industrial and political heritage will be examined and its influence identified, both for the local area and as far afield as South Africa. Dundee was known as the 'home of Scottish Radicalism' and this conference will examine that claim on the widest scale possible."

All the speakers are either graduates or members of staff of the University and include Dr William Kenefick, Professor James Tomlinson and Dr Carlo Morelli of the University's College of Arts and Social Sciences.

The conference is free and all are welcome. It will be held 10am-1pm in room T9 of the University Tower building and refreshments will be served.

NOTE TO EDITORS

This is a historical, not a political, event.
