Modernist architect to talk at University

The modernist architect, Robin Webster, will give a talk at the University of Dundee tomorrow. He will be joined by Stuart Cameron.

Continuing the Energising Cities Series, which was launched by the School of Architecture last week, Professor Robin Webster and Stuart Cameron, will talk on the art of buildings. The pair have formed a new practice (Cameronwebster) designing sustainable houses on dramatic sites on the west coast of Scotland and elsewhere. Cameronwebster have just been shortlisted in their first Scottish competition, an open competition to design a new public square for Pollokshields, Glasgow - they are proposing a new botanical garden.

A twin son of the stained glass artist Gordon Webster, Robin graduated at Cambridge and the Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL. He first formed an architectural practice in London in 1972, on winning the international competition for new offices for the Houses of Parliament, and has won a number of other competitions and awards since then. He has always been closely involved in education, was Head of the Scott Sutherland School in Aberdeen for 21 years, and is now emeritus professor there.

Stuart is the son of a master carpenter and a graduate of the Mackintosh School of Architecture at the Glasgow School of Art, Stuart has a detailed grasp of how materials are put together. He has a discerning eye and a clear approach to form, which he has developed in his work in London.

Fionn Stevenson, Director of Master of Architecture Programme says, "We are delighted that Robin and Stuart have agreed to share their ideas on architecture and in particular their views on the nature of place. Robin’s reputation as an innovative architect and educator is of the highest order - his newly established practice in Glasgow is already attracting wide attention for its daring proposition for a "green" square in the heart of Glasgow. The new Masters programme in the School of Architecture will greatly benefit from his insights when he reviews the work of selected students the following day."

Professor Robin Webster has received the OBE for services to Architectural Education and is Professor Emeritus at the University of Aberdeen.

Thursday 16th Nov. 17.30-19.00, D'arcy Thompson Lecture, Tower Building. Entry free - All welcome.
