Anatomy Acts - Professor Sue Black public lecture

The role played by anatomy in modern forensic science and the changes the subject has had to adopt to keep pace with today’s society will be examined in a public lecture by one of the UK’s leading forensic anthropologists in Dundee next week.

Professor Sue Black, Head of the University of Dundee’s Unit of Human Anatomy & Forensic Anthropology department, will give the lecture as part of the programme of events surrounding the `Anatomy Acts’ exhibition currently being staged at the University.

Prof Black has an international reputation for her work in human identification - in 1999 she led the British Forensic Team in Kosovo, and was awarded an OBE for her work there.

Speaking ahead of her lecture, Professor Black said:

"Anatomy has always been the core subject for all aspects of the study of man and it is a natural progression for the subject to play a central and pivotal role in the investigation of human remains for medico-legal purposes".

The lecture is on Monday 13 November at 5.30pm in the Tower Building of the University. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.

The Anatomy Acts exhibition brings together art, science, history and medicine in exploring the human body and the way it has been represented over the centuries.

Key objects on display in Dundee include recently discovered original anatomical drawings by one of Scotland’s greatest 20th century artists, Alberto Morrocco, and Charles Bell’s painting of a soldier wounded from battle during the Napoleonic Wars.

The exhibition is on show in the Lamb Gallery at the University of Dundee until 13 January 2007, and a lively and varied events programme has been put together to accompany it. The exhibition is being jointly hosted with the University of St Andrews, where further items are on show.

Future events in the exhibition events programme include talks on phrenology and the role of 3D computer art in clinical imaging, a printmaking workshop based around representations of the body, and a special open day for the Tayside Medical History Museum at Ninewells Hospital.
