Evening class is "write" stuff for students
Three members of a writing class organised by the University of Dundee’s Continuing Education Department are celebrating after finding success in three separate competitions.
Susie Schofield, Wadi Gashau and Cathy Whitfield have all honed their writing skills under the tutelage of Esther Read at the evening classes in creative writing.
Susie, a PhD student in education, has won flights to Germany with her submission to the Don’t Mention the War competition run by the German Academic Exchange Service. She will be presented with her prize by the German Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger at a ceremony in London next month. (June)
Cathy, a member of staff at the School of Life Sciences, has won £200 for her second placed short story contribution to the New Writer Prose and Poetry Competition and has been highly commended for another short story in the Café Writers competition.
Wadi, a fourth year medical student, has won £50 for her third placed entry in the Dr Katherine Branson Student Essay Competition 2006.
Esther Read, who leads the Becoming a Writer and Continuing as a Writer courses, said she was delighted with her students’ success.
"The courses offer students the chance to experiment with a variety of different forms of writing and this is reflected in the recent successes,” she said. “Class members work very hard at their craft so it’s good to see them getting the recognition they deserve."
