Saturday Evening Lecture - Dr Kumi Naidoo

Dr Kumi Naidoo, one of the leading voices on global poverty and the need for change in world society in the 21st century, will deliver the last in this year’s series of Saturday Evening Lectures at the University of Dundee this weekend.

Dr Naidoo grew up in South Africa and as a young man joined the struggle against the apartheid regime. That struggle against injustice, fought through collective action, helped to bring down one of the most oppressive regimes of the 20th century.

A Rhodes scholar at Oxford University, Dr Naidoo has been Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer of CIVICUS: World Alliance for Civic Participation since 1998. His work has put him at the forefront of the movement to change our world for the 21st century and create a fairer global society.

His lecture is titled "Rethinking Democracy: Governance, Civil Society and the deepening democratic deficit".

There will be a Q&A session following the lecture, chaired by George Reid MSP, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament. Mr Reid hosted an Africa Day at the Scottish Parliament last year at which Dr Naidoo spoke.

The lecture takes place at 6 pm on Saturday May 27th in the D’Arcy Thompson Lecture Theatre (formerly the Tower Extension Lecture Theatre) at the University of Dundee, Nethergate, Dundee. Entry is free and all are welcome to attend. The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception.
