The Modern Scot - exhibition

Lower Foyer Gallery 18 March - 1 April
Preview: Friday 17 March, 5-7pm

First time collaboration for students results in dramatic installation.

Olive green walls, a ceiling of string and stacks of archival volumes of the Times are a result of a group of 2nd Year Fine Art students’ experimentation with the space in two weeks. Seeking a challenging project outside the confines of their individual studios, they have created an exhibition from their development of ideas and exploration of space.

The installation is a result of a reaction to the gallery space and a natural progression of work made in three workshops. The dense ceiling of string is just above head height, and the green walls darken the space from the usual white cube. Stacks of Times newspaper archival volumes make steps to view the space from another perspective, whilst white pillars stick up through the string ceiling. The projects were set in the first week by Miranda Blennerhassett and Louisa Preston, (two graduates from DJCAD). The students learnt how to change how the space is viewed and experienced by the gallery goer. Using the materials available to them they came up with ways of connecting parts of the space. Wool and string was attached from corner to corner and electrical tape was used to make drawings on the walls. Through their experience of the project they learnt how to work together, as a team towards one unified piece.

The exhibition can be seen in the Lower Foyer Gallery, Exhibitions Department, DJCAD, 13 Perth Rd, Dundee, until 1 April. Opening hours are Mon-Fri: 9.00am - 5pm, Sat: 9.30am - 4.30pm. Tel: 01382 3485330
