dp003 - converse without leaving home
University of Dundee Exhibitions Department’s audio label discparc, along with our Canadian counterpart Lisa Deanne Smith, a Freelance Curator, have compiled a sound project that profiles artists from Scotland and Canada (with a particular focus on Toronto). Reinforcing the long-standing link between these two countries this project sees an audio art exhibition showcasing the sound works of six Scottish and six Toronto-based artists, which is accompanied by the release of the sound works in a limited edition audio CD (dp003) and fanzine.
From a call for submissions put out in 2005 we received an eclectic breadth of work allowing this release and exhibition to bring together for the first time a wide range of styles and artists from across Scotland and Canada. Works represented are unique, challenging and experimental, from artists at an established period of their career to those still to graduate.
Scottish works include the experimental use of a Kalimba, a traditional African instrument, by Diana Simpson who studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. The piece by Mark Vernon, a band member of Hassle Hound, uses unique sources of found media including archive recordings of the Nottingham Co-operative Tape Club.
Works from Canada include a piece from Mike Hansen, an established turntablist, who approaches the turntable as an instrument to generate sounds and Julie Tucker’s piece, PLEDGE, where we hear a group of women reciting a pledge reminiscent of those made by the Brownies or the Girl Guides promising to be good people and be good to each other.
The 12 audio pieces will be presented through two minimalist booths and can be listened to via headphones. The exhibition will take place in the Cooper Gallery until 15 April, the CD and fanzine will be on sale during the exhibition.
