Dundee Professor heads Pathological Society
Professor David Levison, Professor of Pathology and formerly Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, in the University of Dundee, is the new President of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
He was elected by the membership of the Society to succeed Professor Sir Nicholas Wright from July 2006 for a three year term.
Professor Levison said he was "delighted and honoured to be taking up the position of President of the Society."
"I have always thought of Path Soc in the same terms as the University of Dundee - a place for serious fun," he said. "The science at the meetings is always first rate, and they are always great fun. I shall do my best to promote the aims of the Society".
The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland aims to further the understanding of disease processes - a mission encapsulated in its slogan "Understanding disease."
Its journal, the Journal of Pathology, is now the most cited pathology journal in the world, having overtaken the American Journal of Pathology in the world rankings only last week.
The society is celebrating its Centenary this year with a special week long scientific and educational meeting in Manchester -the venue of the very first meeting in July 1906.
A number of other initiatives to support Academic Pathology, including new PhD schemes, Clinical Fellowships, a donation to the Royal College of Pathologists to upgrade educational accommodation, and additional funding to its Open Scheme will also form part of the Centenary celebrations.
Professor Levison is currently involved in research on colorectal cancer and lymphomas (cancers of the immune system) in the University of Dundee and he also Chairs the Dundee Tumour Bank Committee.
