There may be more than a few double takes at the final University of Dundee graduation ceremony this afternoon (Tuesday July 11) when identical twins Emily and Laura Paterson collect their medical degrees.
The 23- year-old sisters from Giffnock in Glasgow have supported each other through their tough five year degree course and are now looking forward to a double celebration to toast their success.
"University has been brilliant," said Emily. "We both chose to come to Dundee because we wanted to go away for university life and Dundee had a good reputation for studying medicine."
She added that although they are close friends and share many interests including playing hockey for the university team they have also followed their own paths as far as their studies have been concerned.
"We do spend a lot of time together and we have helped each other when studying but we opted for different clinical attachments and separate electives with Laura going to Sydney while I did mine in New Zealand."
The two sisters will also be taking up their training posts in different hospitals albeit both in Glasgow.
"I’m going to be working in the Southern General while Emily will be going to Hairmyres," said Laura.
"We’re both looking forward to starting work if a little apprehensive but we both feel that Dundee Medical School has prepared us well for the challenge ahead."
Emily and Laura added that while they are the first in their family to graduate in medicine they will not be the last as their younger sister is already following in their footsteps and is in her second year of a medical degree in Edinburgh.
