Korean and Chinese students complete `Journey'
Eleven Korean and Chinese students who have been engaged in preparatory studies at Duncan of Jordanstone College this summer will put their work on exhibition from today.
The students have made the work as part of their preparatory study before they join further courses at the college in September. The exhibition, called `Journey', explores themes of personal, spiritual and physical journeys.
Work on show includes textiles, architectural models, new media, design and fine art. The work has been created whilst the students are in a transitional stage from an eastern to western culture and as preparation to this new educational system and language. Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design’s Continuing Professional Development Unit work with University of Dundee’s School of Applied Linguistic and Language Studies to deliver this preparatory course.
Chinese student Jing Bi, who will join the School of Architecture in September, has been inspired from her daily journey to the college, up and down Perth Rd. Making architectural sketches of the houses and buildings along the street, her final book folds out to become the street itself.
Korean student Ah Young Song, has made a tree in the gallery from chicken wire. The sculpture represents the ‘Sansindang tree’, from Korean tradition, which was believed to protect people. Photographs hang from its branches, representing Ah Young’s emotional journey from Korea to Dundee.
The exhibition opens at the Lamb Gallery,in the Tower Building at the University of Dundee on Fri 18 August at 12.30 pm. It runs until 2 September.
