Giant fish to appear inside a Kangaroo - it's time for Dundee Masters Show 2006
A giant papier mache fish will be one of the fascinating displays at the Dundee Masters Show from Saturday.
The fish, which is almost seven feet long, is part of a collection of work by Keith-born artist Trevor Gordon, which also includes organic shapes such as triffids and humans.
Trevor says, "I grew up in a small village where the only art that I ever saw was seascapes which were housed in small dusty museums. I never thought they were proper art; instead I was inspired by the PT Barnum type freak shows that came to our village."
"I remember a tour coming to our village of ‘The True Cross of Christ’ and I vividly remember reading a newspaper report about a half monkey, half fish animal. Of course it wasn’t true, but that seemed closer to art to me than anything else I saw."
"My work examines that relationship that the North East of Scotland has with art - has it progressed beyond traditional work and do people there understand or like modern art?"
Trevor’s art is the culmination of his post graduate year at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. Before coming to the University of Dundee, he had completed an English Language degree and worked in NCR. "My parents were keen for me to get a profession, but they have always supported me," Trevor laughs.
The Dundee Masters Show will include work from all four Masters degrees offered by Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art: Masters of Science Electronic Images, Master of Science Animation and Visualisation, Master of Design and Master of Fine Arts.
The show is being staged at Duncan of Jordanstone College Of Art and Kangaroo Self Storage.
