Joy-Ann Fleming, Paul Dickson and Fabian Sjoblom - Architecture
Regenerating Dublin's dockland area would be a lucrative project for any architecture consultancy, but 12 students at DJCAD have used their creative skills to create a vision for the area, without charging a penny.
Joy-Ann Fleming (24) has designed a dance studio in an old whiskey building, converting the original oblong shape and adding a new performance space that looks our over the Liffey. Joy-Ann has combined her own personal interest in dance with her final year project. After graduating Joy Ann is considering working as an architect in Sydney.
Fabian Sjoblom (27) from Nykoping in Norway has designed a public library on a jetty on the docks. The shape of the new public building follows the shape of the peninsula. Fabian plans to return to Norway after graduating and set up as an architect in Stockholm.
Paul Dickson (24) has designed a Community and Performing Arts Centre in Trinity College. The project consists of five buildings, which will create a cultural quarter in the Trinity area. After graduation Paul hopes to return to work in London, one day to set up his own practice.
The School addresses many complex issues: organisation, spatial, formal and material expression, technology and the balance between internal and external environments. Only an architect is trained to have this holistic understanding of building design and its study involves a combination of analysis, understanding and problem solving. All year 5 students' work is based on unit specialisms: urban, technology, social architecture and building regeneration. Thesis projects are based in Dundee.
