Gold standard award for ISE

ISE, the Institute of Sport and Exercise, has been awarded official accreditation of its laboratories by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences.

ISE's labs are now one of only two laboratories in Scotland to be accredited by BASES, the professional body for Sport and Exercise Sciences in the UK.

"This is the gold standard in terms of accreditation," said ISE Director Brian Ewing. "It is the highest award BASES can make to a laboratory. It is recognition that the lab operates at the highest level in terms of facilities, equipment and staff."

The award builds on the success of ISE sports science manager Dr Audrey Duncan, sport and exercise physiologist Helen Weavers and lecturer in sports biomedicine Dr Alison Kirk who have already been accredited by BASES.

BASES accreditation can be awarded for research and for the provision of scientific support. The ISE labs have won accreditation for both due to the high standards of their services in providing scientific support to elite athletes and also their research in the areas of performance sport and health and physical activity.

ISE staff are actively involved in providing high quality, specialised sports science programmes including testing, monitoring, training and education to athletes and coaches. They support many local, regional and age-group sporting initiatives as well as working with sports and athletes at professional, World and Olympic class level.

They are also involved in a number of research projects including a Diabetes UK funded study comparing the effectiveness of different methods of promoting physical activity in people with Type II Diabetes and a number of applied projects in golf, football and ice hockey.

"In addition to the major investment that the University has made in extending the ISE, BASES accreditation strengthens our position as one of the best facilities in the country," said Dr Audrey Duncan.

"Added to that is the recent announcement that the University has been included in the official London 2012 Olympics Pre-Games Training Camp guide. This will further improve the training environment we can offer to elite athletes preparing for these games as well as the health legacy that they will leave behind."
