Medical educators find FaME with new awards


The first winners of a new series of awards aimed at celebrating the role of medical educators were presented with their prizes at a special ceremony in the Ian Low Centre in Ninewells Hospital at the end of February.

Recipients of the Faculty of Medical Educators (FaME) awards included GPs, lecturers, consultants, a medical student and a University department.

The awards, funded by NHS Education for Scotland and the University's Medical School, are designed to encourage and support the development of medical educators.

FaME was established last year and consists of a committee made up of NHS medical staff and four undergraduate medical students.

Nominations for the awards were made by students and teachers' peers. Each award is worth £800 and can be used towards conferences and course fees.

The winners are:

  • Dr Buddhi Gunaratne, Paediatrics - Clinical Teaching Award for his commitment and enthusiasm for teaching
  • Dr Jane Bruce, Hawkhill Medical Practice - Clinical Teaching Award in General Practice
  • Dr Stella Mitchell, Senior Lecturer and Demonstrator in Anatomy, Pre Clinical Teaching Award
  • Dr Jean Ker, director of Clinical Skills Centre - Award for outstanding contribution to teaching and innovation
  • Jessica Morgan, 5th year medical student - Award for her contribution to Medical Undergraduate Education in setting up the Paediatric Club
  • Dr Tom Fardon, Respiratory Medicine, Ninewells - Clinical Teaching Award for his sustained enthusiasm and contribution
  • Prof Dilip Nathwani, consultant in Infectious Diseases, Clinical Teaching Award for his inspiring and motivating teaching
  • Dr James Chalmers, Chest Physician, PRI - Clinical Teaching Award for his enthusiastic and well organised teaching
  • Dr Richard Roberts, Neurosciences - for his Long Term Contribution to Undergraduate Medical Education and The Anatomy Department - Departmental Award for their outstanding contribution to Undergraduate Medical Education
