Gary Player
The University renewed acquaintances with one of the golf's all-time greats when the Open Championship came to Carnoustie during the summer.
Gary Player, the South African who has been one of the game's biggest names for several decades, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University in 1999, the last time the Open was at the Angus links course.
Dr Player was more than happy to visit the University again, this time to present an honour rather than receive one. He was at University House to present the inaugural Gary Player Alumni Trophy to lawyer Andy Harris on Thursday July 19th.
Mr Harris was one of hundreds of University alumni who returned for the Homecoming reunion weekend in June as part of the University's 40th anniversary celebrations.
Alumni were given the chance to play two days golf over the challenging links at Carnoustie only weeks before the course played host to the Open Championship.
Mr Harris, who graduated in law from the University in 1991, posted the best score of the weekend to win the Gary Player Alumni Trophy. He'll also be able to tell friends for years that he managed to win a tournament on the Open course before Padraig Harrington picked up the Claret Jug just a couple of weeks later.
Mr Harris was presented by Dr Player with his prize, a a silver trophy sponsored by Dr Pat McPherson.
The Alumni tournament's runner up was 2005 graduate Dr Douglas Morran, who was presented with a golf umbrella.
